First Page Of My Quiet Book

>> Tuesday, May 22, 2012

I was inspired by creatingbycami's 'Quiet Book'. This is the beginning of mine. I haven't made it to be put in a book yet. Later after i make the back page to this page, i will make the button holes on the side so i can end up binding it into a book form.

My littles came and played with it. They both loved it but my oldest sat there for quiet awhile counting and counting. So nice to see! Hoping this sort of thing will make trips and different outings a lot easier. Although now i need to make two books LOL

Homemade (Cloth) Swiffer Wet Jet Pads

>> Sunday, May 20, 2012

I purchased a hand towel at our local Goodwill store for $.59 for the sole purpose to make myself some homemade Swiffer wet jet pads.
I had gotten my Swiffer wet jet for free when i first started couponing but i realized the disposable pads made the mop, so not cost effective. I had seen several tutorials on making Swiffer duster pads and figured i could apply this same method and make my own wet jet pads.

So i took the hand towel and laid my wet jet on it, traced it and cut it out. I was able to get 7 pads out of 1 hand towel.

Then i did a close zig-zag stitch on the raw edges in hopes of diminishing any raveling and sewed on some velcro. Only bad part is i didn't think about how much velcro i was going to need so i only had enough to finish 4 pads. I'll get to the others later.

I got to use my pads today and they worked great! I am so happy with myself! No more buying those highly expensive pads anymore for me :D

VICTORY!

Oh also, i don't buy the Swiffer mopping solution any more. I figured out you can open a Swiffer solution bottle and refill it with your own. Way cheaper! I had grabbed a bunch of pine sol back when it was on a great coupon deal and that is what i use. Amazing how cheap, yet convenient, mopping can be... and simple!

Ruffle Foot?

>> Thursday, May 10, 2012

So the machine i'm using is an old Sears Kenmore, you know really heavy, green metal monster machines. It's my mother in-laws machine. I've heard they are awesome. My friend said she had one just like it and it could sew jeans, which is amazing to me! Of course to have a machine work properly you have to know all about running it, which i don't... i don't know anything about setting the tension or any of that. I did figure out how to use the CAMs that was with it.

Well today i was looking through a blog and found a post about a 'ruffler foot' for your sewing machine. I watched a few youtube videos and the sucker looks awesome... sure would save me from doing it all by hand. I looked it up and found one for $20 on amazon.com and was about to add it to me kaboodle 'wish list' when i remembered there was a box that mom sent with it with a bunch of machine gadgets. I decided to look in the box just to see if there was a ruffler in there, but i didn't think there was.

Low and behold there was TWO of them in there. I'm soooo excited. I've watched a video on how to install it, i'm going to try it here in a few minutes. Tickled pink!

The box is full of things that i have no clue what they are. Most don't tell what they are but a couple do. One says 'Binder Patented' and the other says 'Edge Stitcher'. Of course i don't know what they do or how to use them. Back to youtube i go to see if there is anything about these gadgets too.

Kinda exciting, kinda scary cause i don't know what i'm doing and could do something all wrong. Haaa, i'm sure i can figure it out.... or at least i know i will try!

Thrift Store Finds

I bought some ugly purses and belt just for there buckles. All in all i paid $6 but would have spent far more then that if i bought them in a store or online. The online ones i was looking at were a $1-$2.50 a piece.

Then i found these music boxes. I was so excited! These have the turning mechanisms in them that i have seen used in several Steampunk crafts. YAY! One doesn't seem to be working so i will open it up, see if i can get it to work, if not i'll have some pieces to maybe make a cook ring or necklace out of :D

These are a couple curtain i picked up at the thrift store as well. I thought these could make some cool skirts or maybe the left one could even make some pants? I'll have to see :)

Making Your Own Dress Form

>> Tuesday, May 08, 2012

I've been wanting a dress form since... forever. Couple things have stopped me. For one the price, even on major sale the cheapest i could find was $99 dollars, to much for me! The second issue is none of them were small enough for me :(

Then today i was looking up things on Steampunk Fashion (my new love) and found a video and some blog 'how to' posts on making your own dress form!

Thought i would share! Here is the video:

Also some helpful blog posts:
  • makingitwell.blogspot.co.nz
    • She goes in to a little more detail that i think was helpful.
  • This blogger broke it down into 4 posts. This way of making a form looks way more involving and more pricey but i thought i would share in case someone wants to get really into it. Post 3 & 4 i think would be great for any form though, you should check it out.
    • 1 of 4
    • 2 of 4
    • 3 of 4
      • This post shows a neat way to make a stand for your form out of PVC piping which is fairly cheap. I like the idea of putting wheels in the bottom and maybe making it able to twist back and forth for easy use. I would probably want to spray paint it to make it look even better :)
    • 4 of 4
      • This post shows you how to make a pretty cover for your form to make it look professional. Me likey!
I'm thinking could you do something very similar using newspaper for the paper mache (like you would make a pinata?) probably would take longer and you might have to use more layers but i wonder if it would work... would be cheaper and since i am a couponer i always have tons of newspapers sitting around LOL Just a thought.
Might be more effective to just by the paper tape like they show, it's not very expensive and might hold up longer *shrugs*

I'm hoping i can talk my hubby into helping me make one of these, i'm so excited i don't know what to do with myself!!!!
